9 Social Media Mistakes to Avoid

1. Quantity of posts matters more than quality

If you have enough resources (staff, time, creativity) to generate unique and engaging content five times a day on Facebook, you’re fine. Otherwise, limit yourself to one or two posts a day. Make sure they are relevant, interesting for your audience, and supported by professional photos or videos. Engagement will grow.

2. Trying to cover every social network

Some entrepreneurs believe they need brand accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, YouTube, etc., or they’ll miss out. Sometimes serious products with an older audience, like plastic windows, try to look for buyers on Snapchat.

The question is: “To whom? Why?”

Every platform needs tailored, unique content and active management: replies to comments, contests, and interaction with UGC. The best option is to focus on one or two networks where your audience is most active.

3. Duplicating content

This is the most common mistake. Even a slight adaptation between Instagram and Facebook can increase engagement. For instance, avoid hashtags on Facebook posts but use them on Instagram. It creates uniqueness with minimal extra effort.

4. Not using video

Statistics show that Facebook “prefers” video posts more than any other type. They get more organic reach and better responses. But this only applies to videos uploaded directly to Facebook, not external links. Use square format videos for better visibility on smartphones. Also, keep in mind that most people watch videos without sound.

5. Only writing “sales” posts

Another mistake is filling every post with calls-to-action. This annoys subscribers. Instead, share useful product-related content that helps customers in their daily life. For example, if you sell supplements, post about diets, sports, and healthy living.

6. Ignoring user-generated content

UGC is key for engagement and loyalty. 90% of users say UGC influences their buying decisions. Encourage your subscribers to share content with your branded hashtag and use it in your posts.

7. Not targeting the right audience

If you promote a bar in Riga, why not use geographic targeting? Facebook assigns a relevance score to posts and shows them first to people most interested. Proper targeting boosts reach, especially for local businesses.

8. Not boosting successful posts

The most effective way is to boost posts with above-average organic engagement. Publish, wait a few hours, check stats, and then promote. This improves content quality and saves your ad budget.

9. Not responding to comments

Research shows that 89% of brands don’t reply to their followers. One in three users will go to competitors if ignored. Always respond to comments, questions, and reviews — especially negative ones.
