Why do search engines fight link spam?<\/p>\n<p>Because any type of spam reduces the quality of search results. Link spam targets sites and pages whose positions were obtained unnaturally, aiming to manipulate search engine algorithms.<\/p>\n<p>PageRank<\/p>\n<p>One of the first algorithms designed to combat spam (not link spam but text spam) was Google\u2019s PageRank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PR(A)=(1-d)+d(PR(T1)\/C(T1)+&#8230;+PR(Tn)\/C(Tn))<\/strong>, where<\/p>\n<p><strong>PR(A)<\/strong> \u2013 weight of page A;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PR(Tn)<\/strong> \u2013 weight of the page linking to A;<\/p>\n<p><strong>C(Tn)<\/strong> \u2013 number of links on page Tn;<\/p>\n<p><strong>d<\/strong> \u2013 damping factor, usually 0.85;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1-d<\/strong> \u2013 teleportation element.<\/p>\n<p>Principle: a \u201cRandom Surfer\u201d moves through links randomly. He may either follow one of the links or \u201cteleport\u201d to any page. The probability of following a link is the PageRank.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130622070907im_\/https:\/\/semseo.md\/images\/stat\/statia6.png\" alt=\"PageRank\" width=\"464\" height=\"374\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the formula we can understand how to manipulate PageRank:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the donor page has high weight;<\/li>\n<li>the donor page has few outbound links;<\/li>\n<li>many donor pages link to A;<\/li>\n<li>the distance is 1 (each additional step reduces weight by 0.85).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Conclusions about links on your page:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>links do not remove weight from the hosting page;<\/li>\n<li>the more links there are, the less weight each passes on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ironically, PageRank, created to fight text spam, started the age of link spam.<\/p>\n<p>TrustRank<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the algorithm is to detect spam pages and trustworthy ones.<\/p>\n<p>It is based on semi-automatic detection of good pages, relying on these principles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>good documents rarely link to bad ones;<\/li>\n<li>careful selection of links is inversely proportional to their number.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Working principle:<\/p>\n<p>1. Compute inverted PageRank (based on outbound links).<br \/>\n2. Perform manual evaluation (~200 sites are enough to assess the Web).<br \/>\n0 \u2013 spam<br \/>\n1 \u2013 good<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130622070907im_\/https:\/\/semseo.md\/images\/stat\/statia6-1.JPG\" alt=\"statia6-1\" width=\"299\" height=\"211\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. TrustRank spreads as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the further from the source, the lower the score;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130622070907im_\/https:\/\/semseo.md\/images\/stat\/statia6-2.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"117\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>TrustRank is evenly divided among all outbound links.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20130622070907im_\/https:\/\/semseo.md\/images\/stat\/statia6-3.JPG\" alt=\"TrustRank\" width=\"236\" height=\"147\" \/><\/p>\n<p>TrustRank was developed in 2004.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: This describes the algorithm used by Yahoo. Other engines may use similar algorithms. Google acquired Hilltop in 2003.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>High TrustRank factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sites in Yaca and Dmoz directories;<\/li>\n<li>old sites;<\/li>\n<li>sites with unique content;<\/li>\n<li>sites that carefully select outbound links.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Example: Wikipedia ranks high because it has been manually assigned a very high trust level.<\/p>\n<p>Topic-sensitive PageRank<\/p>\n<p>This algorithm calculates link weight considering the topic of the donor page. Each topic has its own vector. Topic similarity is measured by vector closeness.<\/p>\n<p>Possible manipulation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>buying links from donors with the same topic and high PR;<\/li>\n<li>buying links from thematically close donors with high PR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>BrowseRank<\/p>\n<p>BrowseRank is another algorithm used by search engines.<\/p>\n<p>&lt;img","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Theory and Practice.
